Scuba diving
While walking the Lycian Way in Turkey in 2012 I met a dive master who invited me to return to Kas to learn to dive. I dove twice a day for 2 weeks and received my open water certification. Upon returning to Canada I did my drysuit certification and my advanced open water and began to explore the westcoast from
Vancouver, BC to Juneau Alaska. I also enjoy warm water diving and have a long list of destinations. So far I’ve dived off a liveaboard in the Galapagos (Wolf and Darwin), dived from boat access and beach access in Bali, Ningaloo (Western Australia), Philippines (Dumaguette, Bohol and Anilao).
Skiing
I have been skiing for over 50 years. I love powder snow.
My first trip to Japan was 2016-2017. I ski toured on Hokkaido and skied backcountry back on Honshu.
The snow is extraordinary and the terrain is fascinating.
Cycling
Cycling through a new city or area is such a great way to explore! I’ve cycled through Melbourne, Kathmandu, Paris, Tokyo, Istanbul,
Geneva, Stockholm, Victoria and Vancouver cities in addition to several day and weeklong explorations of the countryside wherever I may be.
Reading
Eudora Welty writes:
The events in our lives happen in a sequence in time, but in their significance to ourselves they find their own order, a timetable not necessarily — perhaps not possibly — chronological. The time as we know it subjectively is often the chronology that stories and novels follow: it is the continuous thread of revelation.
Thank you Maria Popova for your weekly contributions to my reading.
Travel
To coddiwomple is to travel purposefully towards an as-of-yet unknown destination and is a notion that appeals to me enormously. I shall continue to use it to describe my travels.
